“Well I would be glad to have another person stay with me, would you be interested?”
Nadya thought about that for a few minutes, glancing at the window of the building in front of the warehouse...she thought she saw something move, but no amount of squinting with her one good eye could help her make out anything.
"-Well...it depends."
She went over to the window facing the building out front and stood in front of it, watching the window where she thought she had seen something move.
"It depends if we have any food and drinkable water here, if the place is safe from attack and disease..."
She glared at the window. Something had definitely moved in the shadows inside the building.
"...and it also depends on wether or not the guy watching us from that building will come out or not."

Vlad cocked his head. The woman was looking out the window at him.
She knows I'm here. But is she an enemy? She'd have to have training to have spotted me. That means she has some military training. Hmmm...
An idea came to him. He pulled out a small keychain flashlight and held it up. He quickly flicked it on and off in Code. He didn't notice he was "speaking" Russian through the flashlight though.
"...Vi...sodroozhyestvyenni?..."
They'd be able to see the light since the room he was in was dark. Seeing their response would be a bit more difficult, however. He flicked the message a few more times before sitting back and awaiting the response.
-------------
Vi sodroozhyestvyenni? - Are you friendly?

Johnny said, "Well i can not guarantee everything is completely safe and completely sane, but we can always improve."
Johnny looked up in the window and saw a light flashing. Johnny then shook his head and said, "He asshole, we can see you, show yourself!"
He did not come out and it did not seem as if he was going to come out. Johnny tried to ignore him and went back to talking to her.
"So what’s your name?"

"So what’s your name?"
"-Shh, he's signalling us."
Nadya observed the blinking light across the street for a while before realising a few things.
"Our neighbour is asking us if we're friendly...and he's speaking in Russian."
She looked around the small meeting room for something she could use to answer the stranger's question, and found a portable whiteboard with an old blue pen next to it.
She took it to the window and wrote in Russian:
"Да, мы дружим, товарищ. Вышедший и присоединяются к нам так, у нас может быть надлежащий чат"(Yes, we are friendly, comrade. Come out and join us so we can have a proper chat).
She then added, as an afterthought, a French phrase she had picked up in New Orleans: "Plus on est de fous, plus on rit".
Nadya then opened the window and stuck the portable whiteboard out, placing it so it faced the window in the building opposite.
"There, that should reassure him a bit...oh yeah, my name is Nadya."

Vlad couldn't quite see what the white board said. The woman had written it too small. He slunk away from the window and found a door and staircase down. Lower down to the ground, he could see the board a bit better and could see it was written in Russian.
Did I accidentally code in Russian? he wondered.
He could see the writting confirmed that they were friendly, but he couldn't make out the last line. Vlad shrugged. Probably wasn't important. It was written in French after all. He looked around for an exit and found a door that opened up into an alleyway behind the building out of site from the warehouses. He entered the alleyway and snuck around to the street corner. He made sure he was out of sight of both the warehouse and where he entered the district and crossed the street. He slunk through the warehouses until he reached the Northwest one. He knocked on the door but stood on the hinge side, just in case, and kept the AK in his hands.

Nadya took the board back inside and rubbed it clean with the sleeve of her jacket.
A few minutes later, they heard a knock at the door.
"Sounds like our Russian visitor has arrived."
She went over to the door and opened it cautiously. The hinge side of the door was on her blind side, so she did not spot Kysnetsov hiding there until she stepped away from the door and into the alley. As she stepped out into the alley, she heard the slight crunch of gravel under somebody's foot and turned round to face the man who had previously been hiding in the building opposite the warehouse.
"Привет. Вы возражаете убирать то оружие?"(Hello, do you mind putting that gun away?), she said with a slight Siberian accent while looking at the AK-47 the man was carrying.

Vlad looked at the woman and cocked his head at her. She seemed very tough and grizzled.
Probably saw some military service. Explains how fast she spotted me. "Dobriy dyen'," he said as he slung the AK. He kept his hand near his knife however, but held out his hand. "Moye imya Kyznetsov. Kto vi?" he asked.

Nadya relaxed slightly as the man slung his AK over his shoulder, but she did notice how his hand hovered near his knife.
"Добрый день, мое имя Киснетсов. Кто Вы?", he asked.
Nadya's eye was once again drawn to his knife. The hilt looked familiar, like one of those knives the spetsnaz had that could send the blade flying over several metres. If the man was a former member of the spetsnaz, he'd be deserving of respect...Nadya had only been a regular soldier, and the spetsnaz were almost superhuman in her eyes.
She had seen them operate in Chechnya during a mission that involved capturing a hill that had been turned into a real warren of tunnels and underground hiding places by the insurgents. They had sent a few grunts in, and they had never come out. A spetsnaz team was called in and they cleared the tunnels within an hour.
"-Я Нaдья Орумов. Вы были в российской Армии случайно?" (I'm Nadya Orumov. Were you in the Russian Army by any chance?)

Vlad raised an eyebrow.
She's observant, he thought.
Vlad decided to switch to english since there was a chance that other civilian who probably didn't speak Russian could be nearby.
"Yes. I was in sixteenth SpN Brigade. VDV." Vlad cocked his head at Nadya again. "You do not seem to be true civilian yourself, if I may say so." He touched his eye to indicate hers. "That does not seem to be industrial injury."

The man was an ex-spetsnaz...Nadya was unsure wether she should salute him or not. Finally, she decided saluting him was unnecessary.
"-I was in the 85th Motor Rifle Division...Regular Army, Siberia. I lost sight in my left eye in 2010, when a case of tracer ammunition blew up next to me...would you like to come in? We'd be safe from looters inside."

Vlad nodded to himself and gestured to a pucker mark on his left arm.
"I know tracer wounds too well. Not pretty,da?"
The two entered the building and Kyznetsov looked at the other civilian.
"You are?" he asked.

"Oh hello, I am johnny, my friend owned this building. When i came to check on him I found him dead, so i am going to stay here and collect a good bunch of people until help can get us out of here, if we will ever get out of this."
"How bad is it out there? I have not been out there a lot?"

"How bad is it out there? I have not been out there a lot?"
Nadya looked at Johnny.
"-Well...it's pretty bad. A lot of looting, the authorities seem to have vanished altogether and there's a lot of destruction too. The looters have some pretty nasty weaponry too. I saw a cop car that had been blown up with an RPG...but I also suspect that some cops and soldiers went AWOL. Let's hope they just left the city and didn't join in on the looting, we do not want renegade military personel with proper combat training and weapons roaming around the area."
There was the loud, but distant sound of an explosion outside, and Nadya glanced out of the window. Whatever it was, she couldn't see it from here.
"Sounded like a petrol tank exploded or something...let's hope these warehouses don't have any flammable substances stored in them."
She drew a chair towards her and sat down, taking out her newly aquired pistol and examining it.
"I'd like to know if the soldiers that were here earlier are trustworthy or not...are they?"

Vlad moved to each window in turn and checked fire lanes and positions without really thinking about it. As he finished the last window, he realized his paranoia was kicking in and made himself sit down. He looked at Polk and Nadya.
"Its bad, but not as bad as some places I've been. Afganistan was worse. Much worse." He paused as memories flooded back. None of them pleasant. He mentally shook himself. "My shop is perfectly safe, however. If you want, we can use my home above the shop as a Forward Observation post if need be. As to the soldiers, if Johnny here is alive, they must not be too bad. Either that, or Johnny paid them off," finished Vlad with a shrug.

Nadya looked at Kyznetsov.
"So that store on Bourbon Street with the dead looters in front of it was yours?"
She laughed slightly. The ex-spetsnaz probably rigged it with explosives...lucky she hadn't decided to go inside and have a look around. Nadya looked out of the window again and saw a thick, black plume of smoke in the distance...so some fools had decided to have a gunfight next to a petrol tank or something...
"I think our main goal should be escaping from this city, because I have a feeling there won't be anyone to rescue us."
Suddenly, she saw an old man emerge from round the bend and walk past the warehouses...he was wearing a dirty, blood-soaked tracksuit and was mumbling to himself. Nadya watched him as he disapeared down the street, still mumbling and looking around him with a haggard, insane stare.
She looked at the two others again.
"So, do we move out or stay here? I like the first option better."
